Effective Communication Skills for Doctors

Effective communication skills within medicine or life in general are crucial to successful interaction with people. Working as a doctor within a healthcare setting you will be frequently communicating with all levels of people during the course of your typical day. This could extend to senior colleagues, junior colleagues, patients, relatives and even further; you are interacting with numerous different types of people in different situations looking for different outcomes. You could be trying to persuade some, influence another, or resolving conflict between two parties.

When faced with these interactions there are three critical factors you need to focus on:

·         What are you trying to achieve?

·         What behaviours will you use and expect?

·         How successful were you?

Suitable for all grades and specialties of doctor, the aim of Effective Medical Communication Skills for Doctors is to enable you to explore the principles of advanced communication skills within a clinical environment. Our CPD accredited course (8 CPD points) has been designed by experienced consultants to improve the assertiveness and confidence of those doctors working with a diverse range of people within a healthcare setting.

Furthermore, when you book onto this course you will receive a pre-course module to complete prior to attendance worth one CPD point. Additionally, having finished our communication skills course you will be able to complete a post-course module also worth one CPD point reflecting on what you have learned and integrated into your practice.

The features of our medical communication skills course include:

·         Being able to name five barriers to effective communication and how to design a strategy to overcome them all

·         Recognising the seven ways to influence others, including knowing when and when not to use each

·         Perceiving each of the four different personality styles and how to deal with them, understanding how opposites require behavioural strategies

·         Naming the percentages used in the TRIAD and your assertive rights

·         Discovering how assertive you are in your daily practice and the differences between aggression, passivity and assertiveness

·         Dealing with conflict and understanding how transactional analysis can assist such situations

·         Naming the three ego states and how to recognise them

·         Exploring how to truly listen effectively – generally in life people hear but do not really listen. Those that do really listen will have an advantage

·         Considering how different people take in information and relate to different communication styles –understanding the different styles allows us to use the appropriate style to relay the message effectively

Furthermore, at the end of our course you will be able to:

·         Keep a record of your learning experiences so that learning points can be reflected upon and referred to after the course

·         Have the opportunity to prepare a detailed Action Plan which sets SMART objectives (activities with timescales), together with a Record of Learning and Action Plan, a method of incorporating what you have learnt into your everyday practice and earning you additional CPD

To book onto this course, select a date and location from the drop down list above and then click the ‘Add to basket’ button where you will be able to pay by card, cheque or invoice request.
