The Doctor as Medical Manager

Jointly developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF) has been implemented within the NHS to help doctors become more actively involved in the planning, delivery and improvement of health services. Consequently, it has become of the utmost importance that doctors strive to improve their medical leadership and management abilities and thus improve their level of practice.

Our Leadership and Management Course for Senior Doctors is ideally suited for ST4 doctors and above. This deeply interactive three-day CPD accredited course (18 CPD points) demonstrates that leading and managing effectively at a senior level within the NHS is essential as your career progresses and this necessitates the development of practical and applicable leadership skills, some of which may be a departure from traditional methods. Working in small groups for maximum benefit, our course details how you can successfully develop as a medical leader and manager within the framework of the NHS, as well as exploring other leadership and management views and techniques from other professional organisations.

Delivered jointly by NHS consultants and professional leadership experts, our course will enable you to:

·         Understand the principles of advanced leadership and management approaches

·         Explore various leadership models within a healthcare setting

·         Gain insight into the NHS hierarchy and current management and political issues

·         Learn how to lead and motivate a multidisciplinary healthcare team

·         Increase your confidence of being able to lead within a clinical setting

·         Give and receive feedback in an effective manner

At the end of the course each delegate will also be able to:

·         Keep a record of their learning experiences so that learning points can be reflected upon and referred to after the course

·         Have the opportunity to prepare a detailed Action Plan which sets SMART objectives, activities with timescales, together with the Record of Learning and Action Plan, a method of incorporating what you have learnt into your everyday practice
