Medical Presentation Skills

Today we live in an age of fast moving and far-reaching communications. We can bounce messages off satellites; we can speak to astronauts on the moon. The hardware involved is complex and is being improved upon almost daily. However, our individual ability to communicate effectively with one another has developed very little.

The average person can manage a reasonable conversation with one other person. When that one person becomes an audience, when the conversation becomes a presentation, then many otherwise competent people lose confidence in themselves. Nervous tension is one of the main barriers to effective presentations. It is this that makes some people stilted, insincere and unnatural. Nervous tension is born of three fears: fear of failure, fear of looking foolish, and fear or forgetting.

The practical way of dealing with fears and anxiety leading up to a presentation is thorough preparation. If you know how to prepare and present a talk, and find a way of remembering what has been prepared, the battle is already half won. To this end, our CPD accredited Teaching Presentation Skills course will fully prepare you for the challenge of delivering a medical presentation to a group of your peers or students.

Features of our acclaimed presentation course include:

·         Explaining how nerves manifest themselves and how to overcome them

·         Understanding clearly why a presentation is needed and being given

·         Giving clear reasons why knowledge of your audience requires some research and its’ importance to a successful presentation

·         Demonstrating effective use of your voice and the techniques used to maximize its’ impact

·         Identifying the key body language behaviours of a professional presenter, and so how to recognise what the audience’s body language is saying to you

·         Designing effective visual aids to provide impact to your presentation

·         Learning how to position questions from your audience to maximize control

·         Understanding how to use mind mapping as a way of planning and preparation

·         Designing and delivering a presentation during the course

Furthermore, at the end of Teaching Presentation Skills you will be able to:

·         Keep a record of your learning experiences so that learning points can be reflected upon and referred to after the course

·         Have the opportunity to prepare a detailed Action Plan which sets SMART objectives, activities with timescales, together with the Record of Learning and Action Plan, a method of incorporating what you have learnt into your everyday practice
